Donnie C. Akers, OD, serves as Interim Dean of the College of Optometric Medicine at ºÚÁÏרÇø of Health Professions (ºÚÁÏרÇø). Dr. Akers brings more than 25 years of experience spanning higher education, patient care, academic administration, curriculum development, and interprofessional collaboration.

A graduate of the Indiana University School of Optometry, Dr. Akers has held numerous leadership positions across optometric education. Prior to his appointment as Interim Dean at ºÚÁÏרÇø, he served as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs for the University’s Doctor of Optometry program, helping guide academic operations, accreditation efforts, faculty recruitment and development, and student success initiatives.

Throughout his career, Dr. Akers has combined academic leadership with extensive clinical experience in both private practice and federal healthcare systems, including more than a decade serving patients through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. His commitment to excellence in optometric education has been reflected in his work as an Associate Professor and course director in gross anatomy, ocular anatomy, and ocular physiology.

Recognized for innovation in teaching and learning, Dr. Akers received an award for Most Innovative Use of Technology for Instructional Purposes after introducing one of the first virtual 3D interactive anatomy laboratory experiences for optometric education. He also completed the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry (ASCO) Summer Institute for Faculty Development and has contributed to the advancement of interprofessional education at the local, state, and national levels, including presentations at the American Academy of Optometry and service on an ASCO interprofessional education task force.

Dr. Akers is known for his collaborative leadership style, dedication to studentcentered education, and passion for preparing future optometrists to meet the evolving needs of healthcare and the communities they serve.
